Empowering Biosafety with New Tech
• ASF was originally confined to Africa but has been spreading globally. By the end of June 2023, ASF was confirmed in 23 European countries and 18 countries and regions in Asia, posing a major threat to countries with large pig farming populations.
• The virus is spread by carrying diseased pigs, footwear equipment, ticks and fleas, drinking water, animal carcasses, and transport trucks. It can persist for months on farm surfaces or equipment that have not been properly cleaned, with high morbidity, high mortality, easy transmission, and resistance to high and low temperatures.
• African swine fever has caused economic losses of 10 billion to 100 billion yuan in many countries.
